In the world on online business you may notice that freelancers everywhere are starting a podcast for their freelance businesses. Heck, I started one last week!
I get lots of questions in my inbox as to whether or not freelancers should start a podcast, and the answer really depends on whether or not it makes sense for your business right now.
I’ll tell you from experience that I didn’t start a podcast until I saw that it could actually add value to my business in the form of easily digestible content, building my own brand and marketing. However, I sat on it for about a year because it just wasn’t the right time yet.
Here are the questions I used to determine whether or not I should start a podcast for my freelance business (or any project for that matter!)
Is it the right time?
I made mention of this in the introduction, but if you want to start a podcast for your freelance business then you need to determine whether or not it’s the right time. In fact, take it a step further and ask yourself whether or not you actually have time to record, edit, produce and publish a podcast.
For example, although my audience had been asking me for a podcast for over a year, and although podcasts are major in the personal finance niche, I had other major projects on my plate at the time that didn’t allow the space to put together a podcast.
So, I waited. I made sure to tackle my other big projects first (in my case it was a rebrand and upgrading our backend systems like our CRM and email marketing) and then I got back around to the podcast once I had the time.
Does it make sense for your business?
The second step in determining whether or not you should start a podcast for your freelance business is to figure out if it actually makes sense. For me, it didn’t make sense until I started seeing some shifts in how the revenue streams were coming in.
Granted, since I’m in the personal finance and business niche, one could make the argument that it would have made sense to start a podcast a year ago because, as I already mentioned, podcasts are huge in this space.
However, I didn’t actually go through with it until I had sponsorship opportunities coming to my inbox. Once I saw more potential for sponsorship money, then I started a podcast as another way of getting sponsors.
Another point to mention is that a personal finance podcast doesn’t necessarily get me freelance writing clients, so if that’s why you want to start a podcast then you may be barking up the wrong tree. It does, however, open the doors for consulting clients, sponsorship opportunities and selling my own digital products.
As I’ve mentioned before, freelancers should look into incorporating multiple streams of income into their businesses.
Whether or not you start a podcast for your freelance business really just depends on you and whether or not you think it makes sense. Just remember to ask yourself the two questions above the next time you consider starting one.
