“Success? I don’t know what that word means. I’m happy. But success, that goes back to what in somebody’s eyes success means. For me, success is inner peace. That’s a good day for me.”
Denzel Washington
For much of our lives, we are told that success exists in a box with walls made of money, a title, a family, and the nicest house we can afford. It’s this cultural expectation that has created the capitalistic framework which all have to live in; it’s a prescription that we’ve followed for generations which has lead the earth as we know it into planetary downfall at our hands.
When everyone is holding the same recipe for something that is supposed to make us happy, large social groups become marginalized, unconventional psychological conditions are treated as anomalies, and people like Donald Trump are allowed to run for president. However, we all have it in us to fight against the predefined notion of Success, take ourselves out of that box and turn our thoughts inward to a voice that tells us that it’s okay to want different things, and that inner peace is the true way towards a sustainable happiness.
