Why You Should Hire an Editor to Review Your Website Copy

Your website is your online business card. It’s the first place that customers get introduced to you and your brand. For this reason, you want it to be the very best possible representation of you. I recently hired a copy editor to review the copy on my website, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made. Here’s why you should consider hiring an editor for your website copy as well:

Copy Editing is Probably More Affordable Than You Think

It’s never been easier to find good talent that won’t break the bank. I found my editor on Upwork. I looked for someone who charged a reasonable hourly rate while keeping in mind I wanted to pay an expert appropriately for their effort. Having worked as a freelancer myself, I’m careful to make sure I’m always paying people a decent amount.

The freelancer charged $31 per hour, and I gave them a $5 tip. Check out sites like Upwork and Fiverr for editing. Many highly qualified people use these sites to connect with clients. You can also ask around in your network to see if anyone you know can refer you to someone who does editing.

Copy Editing Can Give Your Copy Pizzazz

Not only did my editor check the copy, but she was also able to rework anecdotes in a way that made a bit more sense. She edited with track marks so I could see what she had done. I went back through each edit to approve them. Afterward, the copy read much cleaner and punctuation problems were fixed throughout.

If you need more than a copy editor, you can actually hire a copywriter to write your company’s about pages, content pages, and product pages. Hiring someone to write can help you develop the story if branding isn’t your forte.

Copy Editing Gives You a Bit of Extra Confidence

There’s something special about having your site looked over by a professional. You know that you’ve gone through multiple stages and you’re putting your best foot forward.

You know each potential customer or prospect coming to your site is seeing a professional product. It shows that you pay attention to details.

Think about how you feel when you go to a site and it’s riddled with spelling, punctuation, and grammar mistakes. What does it make you think about the brand? Are you a bit more hesitant to make a purchase? Your product can be amazing but that may not show through if the presentation is off.

Final Word

I have two sites with many pages so content editing is a work in progress. Eventually, I plan to hire someone to go through each blog post and each page to make edits. In a content-rich world, having great content that’s clean and stands out can set you apart from other business owners. If your content needs a bit of a boost, it may be time to hire someone for a refresh or at least to hire someone to do an editing pass through what you already have.
