How to Overcome Mental Blocks in Marketing

personal success online

personal success online I’ve often said how consistency is the key to marketing. It has since come to my attention that the reason many business owners aren’t consistent is that they can’t even get started. Usually, it’s because they need to overcome mental blocks in order to start marketing.

Take this example from my life. A friend went to a local meetup for bloggers where the focus was on SEO. She reached out to me afterward saying she felt like she didn’t know anything and that’s why she has a difficult time hitting publish.

She’s not the only one who feels this way either. I see it time and time again as I attend business networking events. People know they need to market, but they have mental blocks keeping them from doing so. Here’s how to overcome them.

Don’t worry so much about technicalities.

One of the most common mental blocks I see has it pertains to marketing is getting overwhelmed by technicalities.

This is what my friend was experiencing in the earlier example. The meetup she went to was completely technical and made her feel like she knew nothing. As a result of feeling like she doesn’t know enough about the technical side, she blocks herself.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret from my own business. When I started blogging I wasn’t the least bit concerned with stuff like SEO. I was simply having fun putting stuff out there. This is what allowed me to just start. The technical stuff came later as I learned more. The key is that I learned as I went.

Have fun with it.

Another one of the most common mental blocks I see with marketing is people forgetting to have fun with it.

I think part of the reason for this is they are too attached to an outcome. What if this doesn’t make a sale? And what if I’m wasting my time? What if I can’t understand every minute detail of how this works?

Here’s a newsflash. It’s not about making an immediate sale, it’s about connecting with your audience. This, in turn, leads to a sale. As for wasting time, who hasn’t wasted time or money as they figure out a business? It’s par for the course. And finally, you don’t need to understand every minute detail of how something works in order for it to work.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, start focusing on how much fun you’re having instead. For example, I have fun creating silly Instagram stories. I have fun figuring out colors for my account.

While there is some strategy behind it, my main concern is to have a good time and connect with people. In many ways, I see it as my art. My business success is a direct result of that.

Final Thoughts

By not stressing so much on technicalities and having more fun, you can overcome your own mental blocks in your marketing. The end result is you’ll actually start to get good at it. Furthermore, since you’re putting yourself out there, you’ll also likely earn more money.
