Not long ago, you would be able to measure your worth by the jangle of silver and coins in your pocket. Then it became slips of green paper, emblazoned with the words “In God We Trust” on them, thus deferring all confidence in its legal tender to the Man Upstairs. More money was printed; then cheques. Now, all we need to do to purchase something is swipe a card or key in some digits. Money has always been linked to something greater, if not God, then the universal balance of global finance: economies fall, the balance remains the same in our bank accounts, but their worth declines drastically. Money, of course, is power, and it’s comfort, and a pretty sweet incentive to find better jobs and maybe become a boss of something, but the only thing it isn’t is reliable. For that, you’ll have to look elsewhere.
