“Honesty is the best policy – when there is money in it.”
– Mark Twain
It might often seem as if, when it comes to finance, honesty simply goes out the window. But Mark Twain put it best (as he always does), and simply to boot: “Honesty is the best policy – when there is money in it.”
Despite being one of literature’s greatest minds, Twain has gotten himself into financial turmoil only to take the honest way out: he was a generous investor and lost big, particularly on a mechanical typesetter that didn’t quite wow the market. Even after filing for bankruptcy, and getting back on his feet, he decided to pay all his pre-bankruptcy creditors in full.
While it would be unthinkable to consider this as a viable option for everyone who has filed bankruptcy, we can all take a lesson from the father of American literature and be a little bit more honest about our financial dealings.
