As a business coach, I often have freelancers coming to me completely frustrated that they just can’t seem to make more money. Sometimes they even tell me “We see how much money you made in your last income report and we just can’t seem to do it ourselves!”
Upon further investigation, I realize there are some holes in their freelance business. And so, I want to share with you some simple strategies for making more money as a freelancer.

ToggleHave a profit plan.
If you want to start making more money as a freelancer you need to have a plan – a profit plan that is.
Often times I’ve noticed that freelancers don’t really have any guidelines or goals in their businesses. This is especially true in beginning stages when it seems like they’re throwing spaghetti against the wall.
The truth is you need to have clear goals and intentions if you want to make it in business. Simply knowing what you’re aiming for can help you determine the strategies for getting there.
Once I actually started determining how much money I wanted to make – and then how I would get clients, market myself online and create products to get there – I was able to nearly triple my monthly revenue.
Ask for more money.
The best way to start making more money as a freelancer is to simply ask for more money. I once heard a colleague share something that would forever change the way I felt about quoting freelance clients.
He said, “I just keep raising my rates and asking for more money until someone says no.” The idea here is that you’ll get more people saying “yes” then you may initially think.
Start offering consulting services.
At some point in your freelancing career people are going to start asking you questions. For example, I constantly get asked by businesses how they can get more press for themselves. The end result is I started offering a consulting service specifically for this topic.
Another example is that I often have writers coming to me asking me how they too can start making money. They need to learn about online marketing, sales funnels and negotiating. I saw this as another opportunity for consulting and began to offer it as a service to others.
The end result is that I don’t just make money from freelance writing, I also make money helping other writers and businesses with their content marketing issues.
Overcome your money blocks.
Money is an extremely emotional and psychological topic, and if you want to start making more money as a freelance you’re going to have to overcome some money blocks you may have been carrying for years.
Sometimes our block is that we’re terrified to do sales because society has taught us to be afraid of looking like a used car salesman. Other times our block could be something we learned as a child – like money doesn’t grow on trees or there’s only a limited amount to go around. This leads us to sabotage ourselves.
Whatever it is, you need to do the work to uncover your own blocks and overcome them. Once you start doing this the opportunities to make more money will begin to show up in your life.
There are several great books on this topic but I suggest starting out with Abundance Now by Lisa Nichols and the work of Denise Duffield-Thomas.
Final Thoughts
Making more money as a freelancer isn’t as complicated as people make it out to be. By taking these actions you can begin to set yourself up for increasing your revenue.
