Why I’m Not Seeking a Business Mentor This Year

While always having a business mentor has helped me create an online business, I will actually not be seeking one this year. This may come as a shocker, but there’s actually a very good reason for it.

Are you falling into this trap?

As a business owner and a business mentor in my own right, I have come to the realization that some people fail to implement what they learn. Or, if they do implement what they learn, they don’t give it enough time before seeking another mentor.

It’s kind of like people who are addicted to reading personal development books but don’t actually improve their lives. The only difference is in the case of business mentorship, it has more to do with your career than your life as a whole.

With that being said, here are the reasons why I personally will not be seeking a business mentor in 2018.

2017 was all about mentorship.

I spent most of 2017 working with a business mentor. I also went to endless workshops and conferences, I attended a business retreat and I took a ton of classes. In other words, I think I overdosed on business mentors.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve made a return on my investments. I also started implementing all the things I learned with a lot of success. It’s just that 2018 will be the year I really implement what I spent all of 2017 learning.

I need to focus on my own mentees.

Part of what my business mentor helped me do in 2017 was to create a group coaching program for my tribe. For the last few months, I’ve been running a beta version and implementing what I’ve learned. I have also been figuring out all the kinks and perfecting the program.

With that being said, 2018 is the year when I plan on really pouring my knowledge into my mentees. I need the time to and space to really focus on them for a bit.

I need time to integrate and implement.

After overdoing on business mentorship in 2017, I need to recover. I also need to integrate and implement what I learned. Not only that, but I need to give it time to grow before I jump into the next business project.

I know what I need to do – for now.

Part of the reason why people jump from one business mentor to another is that they don’t think they have the answers they need. In other words, they think that if they take one more class or work with one more coach then they will find some key that unlocks wild business success.

The truth is, you probably know more than you think you do. There’s also a difference between seeking help from an expert for a specific reason versus second guessing your every move and seeking validation.

In terms of the latter, I’ve had to put private coaching clients on strict orders to not ask me questions every time they are about to make a business move. At the end of the day, business owners need to learn to trust themselves instead of always seeking answers elsewhere.

At this stage in business, I know what I need to do. When the time comes for me to seek help for a specific business question, then I’ll seek a business mentor again.
