Charles Caleb Colton – Wealth Is A Relative Thing

“Wealth after all is a relative thing since he that has little and wants less is richer than he that has much and wants more.” – Charles Caleb Colton

We often fall to the idea that wealth is the incessant abundance of money instead of recognizing it as a subjective concept that is defined only by the observer.

The origin of the word “wealth” comes from Middle English in the 13th century, and is actually derived from the words “well” and “health.” Initially, the emphasis of the word was on an individual’s wellbeing. It wasn’t until the 15th century that the word started to become correlated with a person’s monetary worth.

Maybe it is time that we reexamine our own perceptions of wealth and start asking ourselves, “how much wealth already fills our lives?”
