We all know the parable of the curmudgeonly old man who derives no pleasure from much else beyond obsessing over or hoarding money and making the lives around them miserable (Ebenezer Scrooge, Mr. Burns, Biff Tannen, a certain politician/magnate whose last name rhymes with Dump).
