Getting Money Is Not All A Man’s Business – Samuel Johnson
“Getting money is not all a man’s business: to cultivate kindness is a valuable part of the business of life.”
– Samuel Johnson
We all know the parable of the curmudgeonly old man who derives no pleasure from much else beyond obsessing over or hoarding money and making the lives around them miserable (Ebenezer Scrooge, Mr. Burns, Biff Tannen, a certain politician/magnate whose last name rhymes with Dump). These guys are sharks; they circle around their prey already anticipating every last drop of blood, and their game is in finance, because money is imbued with power and net worth can be quantified, made to increase. However, no money in the world will ever give them real feelings, or make them emotionally value in the lives of others, no matter how they try. In the land of the living, real worth lies in kindness, and this is a quality that people intent on purely boosting their net worth with any and all means will never understand. In the business of life, cultivate kindness, and tread carefully into the hearts of others.
