“The way to stop financial joyriding is to arrest the chauffeur, not the automobile.”
– Woodrow Wilson
People like to blame money for a lot of the problems of themselves, the people around them, and the universe: Money destroys. Money destroys families, money destroys nations, and money destroys everything. However, money is just an enabler for the individual’s hidden desires and insecurities.
A financial joyride is this: you make some amount of money, and you’re excited to spend it on things you need, things you want. It’s pretty fun! Maybe you spend a bit too much – anyway, there’s always the next paycheck, and failing that, credit cards.
Your perception of your abilities begins to scale with the numbers you surround yourself with – invoices, receipts, credit, bills. And it all started with a little bit of money. But, as Woodrow Wilson says, blame the chauffeur, not the automobile. Knowing this, the most important thing to remember is that as the chauffeur, you have the power to pull over and go home. Exercise your power, but never blame the car.
