Since beginning my career as a freelance writer, I’ve found other ways to turn one project into an opportunity to work on different kinds of projects for the same client. This means I’ve done everything from writing o teaching, to consulting and even creating videos for the same clients.
The reality is that in the new economy there are endless opportunities to make money – especially because people are focusing heavily on online content. Here are some of the ways you can turn your freelance writing gigs into more money.
Table of Contents
ToggleStart consulting.
Because I’ve managed to get columns on sites such as The Huffington Post and Inc.com, some of the clients I write for have ended up asking me for help with their PR. This has turned into me offering consulting packages in addition to my writing services.
Additionally, because I’ve been publicly sharing my freelance journey online for years, I also have people asking me how they themselves can start their own online businesses. This has also turned into multiple consulting opportunities.
If you have something to teach, you can start consulting. The more experience you get in your freelancing business the more you’ll have to teach others about what it takes. This can turn into speaking, consulting and teaching in a myriad of ways.
Offer other forms of content creation.
I started as a writer, but at this point, I’ve also participated in video creation for online content. It all started with my love of Periscope. Suddenly my writing clients started asking me if I could be the person teaching in some of their video content for their sites.
This is actually how I recently ended up in Orlando filming a class. The class isn’t for me to sell, it’s a product one of my clients are going to sell on their site. I began that business relationship by being one of their writers, and when they moved over to video content I happily offered my ability to teach on camera.
Because they’d already seen me teaching live on Periscope, I was easily able to turn that into a contract deal where I became their resident finance and business teacher for a series of online courses.
I’ve also created webinars, workshops and class content for other people. As you can see, it’s not just blogging, it’s several different forms of content creation.
Turn past clients into sponsors for your own site.
Another way I’ve been able to turn freelance writing gigs into more money is by some of my past writing clients becoming sponsors for my blog. Just because the writing relationship is over doesn’t mean they can’t buy advertising on my website.
Because they already know me and my work, it’s easier to turn former writing clients into sponsors than it is to approach companies that have never heard of me. It also helps that I’ve been building a social media following.
Final Thoughts
We’re living in a day and age where we can easily turn our talents as freelancers into multiple streams of income. We’ve got way more to offer than just writing, and it’s up to us to turn that into opportunities to make money.
