Is there anyone who has lived more happily that Henry Miller? The writer, poet and international lothario gained infamy as a risque writer who dabbled in mystic and erotic arts with gusto, and had several of his novels banned in the US.
He lived in Paris on the heels of the Lost Generation, found a beautiful and sexually empowered young woman to help finance his life in France, moved to Greek, and then to California (and there met and married his last three wives, one by one, each at least three decades younger than him).
For much of his life, he didn’t have a penny to his name, but he lived the way he wanted – writing, basking in the scenic landscapes of Paris and Corfu, collecting lovers, and canoodling with artists. Nice work if you can get it, but Henry Miller proved that following your passion means finding happiness.
