5 Uses for Your Downtime that Will Make You a Better Entrepreneur

Stay motivated

We all need downtime.

But when you have that downtime, what do you do with it?

It seems counterintuitive to plan out downtime that helps your business, or results in being more productive as an entrepreneur. After all, isn’t the point of downtime to be, well, down?

What you do with your downtime does matter, though. The way you spend your downtime can have a big impact on what happens during your business time. If you want to be successful, here are five activities that can make you a better entrepreneur:

1. Exercise

Healthy living can be a great way to help you in all areas of your life. Make time for exercise when you aren’t working on your business. Studies indicate that regular exercise can help your brain function. Not only that, but you will get a burst of endorphins, and you will be healthier in general.

It’s much easier to be a better entrepreneur when you have increased health and mental capacity. Exercise will help you sleep better at night, clarify your thoughts, and improve your overall outlook on life. And those are all good things for your business.

2. Learn

Take the time to read things that teach. While there’s nothing wrong with reading novels for fun, don’t forget to spend some of your reading time learning things.

You can also learn by taking online courses, taking courses at a local university, or doing any number of things that expand your skill set. Understanding various aspects of your business, keeping your mind elastic and sharp, and developing skills that can help your efforts can be rewarding in their own right — and benefit your business to boot.

3. Network

One of the best uses of your downtime is to network. Pay attention to who you meet while you’re out and about. You can also use your downtime to socialize at events where you are likely to meet people who can be helpful to your business. This includes participating in your local Chamber of Commerce, and getting involved with volunteer organizations like Kiwanis or Rotary. Volunteer opportunities provide you the opportunity to feel good, improve your community, and meet others.

4. Spend Time with Loved Ones

Good emotional health will make you a better entrepreneur. This means you should make time for the important people in your life. Build relationships with friends and family. During your downtime, make sure you pay attention to the people in your life. I like to go on outings with my son during downtime. We ride our bikes, go camping, or play games. We watch half an hour of his favorite TV show as well. However, I try not to spend a lot of time watching TV with him because we can be doing more interactive things.

Take the time to maintain those relationships and you’ll be a better entrepreneur over time.

5. Meditate

Meditation can help improve your health and your brain function. Use some of your downtime to meditate and reset yourself. It can result in stress relief, which can help you function better in your business. Plus, it’s good for helping you make better decisions, and it can even help your physical health.

When you take the time to take care of yourself, you’ll be a better entrepreneur. Your downtime choices can even help you improve your business.
