Why Do You Want to Start a Business?

Updated on January 17th, 2022

One of the questions I often ask myself is, “Why?”

This is a question I ask myself before I make many purchases, and it’s one that I return to when I think about my work schedule and what matters to me in terms activities related to my life. As you think about why you want to start a business, it can help to ask yourself why you are moving forward on this path.

It’s Not Just About the Money

The first impulse many people have when thinking about starting a business is to say that they hope to make more money. However, when you drill down a little deeper, there’s a good chance that it’s not truly just about the money.

Money might help you achieve some of your other goals, but it’s probably not the ultimate reason you decide to start a business. For many of us, money is not the end goal. Instead, it’s what helps us achieve the end goal. Take a look at the why behind your desire for making more money to find the reasons you feel that starting a business is the right path for you to follow.

Freedom and Flexibility

I like freelancing because it provides me with a great deal of freedom and flexibility in my life. The money I earn allows me to provide for my son, but I get to do it on my own terms. I am able to set my own schedule, and I can choose my clients.

The freedom and flexibility I have as a result of my freelance business allow me the chance to travel, spend more time with my son, and work in my community. I love doing these things, and I love that I have the freedom to pursue more of my passions. For me, it’s not about having more money. Instead, it’s more about being able to live my preferred lifestyle in comfort. Freelancing gives me that chance.

Make a Difference

I’ve met a several people who start businesses because they want to make a difference. Do you see a need in your community? Could starting a business address that need? One of the realities of life is that you can make a profit and still make a positive difference in your community and even in the world.

I like to think that some of the articles I write about money help other people better manage their finances. However, my business isn’t meant primarily for making a difference. I mostly do it because I need to provide for my son, and this offers a flexible way to do so while helping me achieve other goals. One of the side benefits of the flexibility I have is that now I have time to volunteer in my community and support causes that I feel are important and that can make a difference.

If you want to make a difference and can see how to do it with a successful business, that’s even better. Carefully think about why you want to start a business, and move forward with that as your motivation. When things get tough (and they will), having a solid why to hold to – rather than just making money – can help you stick with it.
