A lot of people working today who have their minds concentrated on a steadily rising ticker may find satisfaction in the viewing of it, but they probably won’t find happiness. People who conflate the means to a treasure with the treasure itself will be held at a distance from truly discovering it.
As Graham Greene puts so poignantly with this quote, money should not be the ultimate endpoint: it is just a means of access to the things we want in life, whether it’s a more comfortable living for our loved ones, a larger house, large annuity, professional success, the freedom to pursue artistic hobbies, higher education for our children, or maintaining a hobby of collecting vintage cars.
One can tell a lot by someone’s ultimate goal in life, and a goal of piling up money indicates an individual who will never know true happiness.
