Places for Freelancers to Go to Get a Motivation Boost

Updated on January 23rd, 2022

Generally speaking, freelancers are motivated simply by being their own boss. They’re usually happier working the way that they do. But, that doesn’t mean that they don’t have off-days. Sometimes the off-days are because they’re stressed about lack of work, not having benefits, or let letting low self-esteem creep-in. But, the main culprit for any lack of motivation is that most of us freelancers spend a lot of time alone. Sometimes solitude can be beneficial when we need to recharge and reflect, but prolonged isolation can affect the motivation to work. There are other places for freelancers to go.

You’ve designed an awesome workplace in your home that is clean, organized and has all the right equipment. You’ve taken the time to find out about and fill your work space with motivators like natural light and plants, but you’re not under house arrest. Remember, you can leave whenever you want. Whether that’s just to visit a friend for lunch, hit the gym, go for a walk, or run errands. Getting out of the house is good for your productivity, health, and most importantly, your sanity. But, what if that hour-long escape from home wasn’t enough to boost your motivation? Then you may want to set-up shop in one of the following places.

Coffee Shops

Between the interior, ambiance, music, buzz of people, caffeine, and free WiFi, it’s no wonder why freelancer love working in coffee shops. Did you know that these factors can actually help improve focus and creativity? That’s what a couple of studies found.

Additionally, coffee shops also provide just enough distraction, which can be better than a silent office. This is because of the motivational boost we get when spotting others who are equally busy and focused.

According to a Wall Street Journal study, small doses of distraction can prompt the mind to work at a more abstract level, which can lead to more creativity.

Coworking Spaces

“Coworking spaces were constructed with freelancers in mind. There’s reliable Wifi and all the amenities that a typical office would include, such as conference rooms that you can use when meeting with clients,” writes Due’s Chalmers Brown.

“Prices vary depending on your needs and location, but there’s also some free coworking spaces like the Wix Lounge or the affordable Makeshift Community.” While some coworking spaces offer a day’s rent, most charge monthly subscriptions.

“One of the best perks about coworking spaces is that it’s great place to meet your fellow freelancers so that you can network and exchange ideas.” In other words, it’s similar to a traditional office where you can interact with colleagues. Most coworking spaces host events like networking opportunities or workshops.

Local Library

Over the last several years, libraries have become great workspaces for freelancers. That’s because they offer the same amenities as coffee shops do, like free internet and spacious tables. But, unlike coffee shops, the background noise is at a minimal.

While white noise can be beneficial, the buzzing of a coffee shop can be a bit much if you’re having trouble focusing. So if you’re looking for some peace and inspiration, a library can be your best bet.

The Outdoors

Weather permitting, you should also get in touch with nature for a dose of motivation. This could be in your backyard or a public park that as tables.

The scenery, fresh air, and faint sound of birds are all great mood boosters. Multiple studies have found that nature decreases stress, makes you happier, relieves attention fatigue, and just makes you feel more alive.

The only downside is that weather can be variable and the lack of WiFi may be a problem. If you need digital connectivity, you may have to bring your own. You can also check-out this list of public parks with free WiFi hotspots.

Hotels

A hotel may sound a little strange. But, if it worked for Maya Angelou, then it can work for you as well if you want peace and quiet. Plus, you can take a nap when you need to recharge.

Hotels come equipped with WiFi, business centers, and fitness centers. There is always a need for meals and hotels have restaurants. Hotels provide a place where you can socialize, exercise, and access the amenities of a traditional office.

While you can book a room yourself, FlexBook and Hotels By Day teamed-up to allow freelancers to create a customized hotel experience based on a persons’ productivity preferences.

Volunteer

While not a workplace, volunteering is a great experience for freelancers — especially since they have flexible schedules. Volunteering can improve your mental health, boost your self-esteem, and help you live-longer.

Helping others can help with creativity and motivation. Additionally, volunteering provides networking and professional development opportunities.

Other Options

If the options listed above aren’t effective, or not accessible, you can also try working at a local college or university, a fellow freelancers home, bookstore, or desk rental.

No matter where you end-up working, the idea is that working from different locations is refreshing and invigorating when you need a motivation boost.

Where are some places for freelancers to go that you find works?
