How to Repurpose Content So You Can Get More Done

Posted on April 8th, 2016

A big part of running a freelance business is the ability to juggle building your own brand with client work.

I’m not going to lie, it’s a lot of work to manage your own company brand while keeping up with clients. You constantly have to be creating high-quality content for yourself and your audience. After all, it’s part of what helps you get hired and get paid. It also opens up the door to other opportunities.

One tip I have found incredibly helpful is to repurpose content and distribute it consistently across social media channels. Here are some of the ways in which I’ve learned to repurpose content so I make sure that I’m consistent in building my own brand while I get more done.

Update Old Content

Back in October 2015 I did a content audit on my own blog. Part of that entailed going back to older posts and updating them with new information. I also consolidated posts that were similar into one giant post for SEO purposes.

This not only helped me create great content, it also helped me save time because the basics were already there. All I did was got back to make some updates and work on the SEO.

Use The Same Content On Different Platforms

I recently decided that after many years of avoiding it, that I would finally start a podcast. Part of the reason why I’m doing this – besides the fact that colleagues and blog readers have been asking me to do it for a year – is because it makes it much easier to have the same content repurposed for different channels.

For example, whenever I publish a podcast using Libsyn, it automatically goes to iTunes and Stitcher. I also put the podcast on my website with some written content and finally, I put the audio on YouTube by making a simple movie with a background on iMovie.

That’s four different places where people can devour my content and it’s all done either automatically or I already have a system in place to get it done quickly.

Another way in which I may start doing this is by uploading my Periscope broadcasts to YouTube. Since I already use the platform I make sure to have my broadcasts saved using Katch. I can then download the video, upload it to YouTube and post it on my own website.

Share Your Content Consistently

This tip isn’t specific to repurposing content, but it’s very important. Most people are scared to consistently share their work on social media because they don’t want to annoy people. The reality is that newsfeeds move way too fast for anyone to notice when you post something the first time.

That’s why, instead of worrying about how often you need to create new stuff, you could instead focus on how often you’re promoting it.

Final Thoughts

While it’s a lot of work to make sure that you’re consistently working on your own content, there are ways to make it easier on yourself. The next time you find yourself stressed about how on earth you’re going to produce so much for your own brand just remember that you can always repurpose content.
