Getting Money Is Not All a Man’s Business – Samuel Johnson
“Getting money is not all a man’s business: to cultivate kindness is a valuable part of the business of life.”
– Samuel Johnson
Money without generosity is greed, and therefore meaningless. Money as a sole motivation is an indication of an empty, passionless product, and therefore meaningless. A man who finds happiness in money has closed himself off to the reality and opportunities of life. Instead, as the good Dr. Johnson writes, cultivate kindness. Kindness softens people, gives them a purpose to give, suggests a capacity for sympathy, an opportunity for love, a feeling that is real and very much in the order of business within the business of love. Don’t start with money – start with kindness.
